Ice Cube "Cops Out" In New Film 'Ride Along'

Ice Cube has signed on to star in the upcoming action-comedy film Ride Along examining racial relations as a rogue cop.

The rapper-turned-actor's forthcoming movie project's plot has been revealed.

Cube will play a rogue cop with a soft spot for his sister. When she reveals she's engaged to an upper-crust white psychiatrist, the cop sets out to destroy the relationship by inviting his future brother-in-law on a ride-along. Chris Bender and JC Spink will be executive producers, and Larry Brezner also will be involved in a producing capacity. Greg Coolidge wrote the script, and Steve Faber and Bob Fisher did a rewrite. Along with starring in the production, Cube will also have an active role behind the scenes.

Cube will produce the movie with his colleague Matt Alvarez from Cube Vision. Production is set to begin this summer. Ride Along will be Cube's first film for New Line since 2002's Friday After Next, which he produced with Alvarez. The deal comes as Cube and Alvarez search for a distributor for his latest starring effort, Janky Promoters. (Entertainment Weekly)

He is also involved in the upcoming N.W.A. biopic.

New Line is developing Straight Outta Compton, an urban drama about N.W.A. The project will chronicle the rise and fall of the rap quartet, founded by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren, whose songs were so incendiary (i.e. "F--- tha Police") they were banned from radio playlists but still sold millions of albums. The film's producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E's widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile). Aside from films, Cube previously signed on to pen an upcoming police comedy series for NBC.

He will both write and executive produce an untitled show aiming to offer the major network something different to help compete with TV ratings. "As we continue to expand our roster of diverse talent both on-camera and behind the camera, a guy like Ice Cube, whose multi-talented, is someone we really wanted to be in busines with," NBC entertainment chairman Ben Silverman said in an October 2008 statement. "He's had an amazing career, to have gone from NWA to this." (Statement)
