Ludacris' "Gamer" Lands $9 Mil Box Office Debut

Ludacris' sci-fi thriller Gamer film, which co-stars Gerard Butler and Terry Crews, debuted with an estimated $9 million in box office sales over the weekend.

The film took steep competition from popular films including The Final Destination and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

The fright flick The Final Destination remained the No. 1 movie for the second-straight weekend with $12.4 million for the first three days of the long holiday weekend. The Final Destination raised its 10-day total to $47.6 million. It came in ahead of Sandra Bullock's romantic comedy All About Steve, which debuted in second-place with $11.2 million from Friday to Sunday. Inglourious Basterds continued to hold gloriously in its third sesh, taking third with $10.8 million Among other new movies, the action tale Gamer debuted at No. 4 with $9 million. The movie stars Gerard Butler in a thriller about real humans controlled by players in lethal games. (Associated Press)

Women reportedly became the deciding factor on the weekend's box office sales.

Ludacris recently unveiled the storyline of his latest film.

"It's definitely one of those movies that's worth going to the theater to check out," he said in an interview. "It's an extremely interesting futuristic action flick so it's set in the future but the crazy thing about it is...you know how interactive video games are and how each and every year they just become more and more amazing, if you can imagine technology and there being a chip inside your brain that allows you to be controlled by another person, that's basically what the movie is about...They're inmates of course and they enter into this battle zone and they're being played by another person in the video game. They're prisoners and if you win a certain amount of battles, then they get out of jail. It's extremely interesting and basically I play a guy that's a leader of a resistance group that is 100 percent against putting chips into any human being because he feels that once that is done, you'll be able to take over all of mankind. The concept and everything, the graphics, the material and the storyline all comes together well so I'm proud of that so on Friday people need to show up at the theater and make this thing happen." The rapper explained the selection process he undergoes for choosing films in an interview earlier this summer.

"It is about controlling peoples' minds and playing them in a video game," Ludacris said about Gamer. "I look at projects regardless of them being independent or big budget. I like being in involved in what I feel are life changing projects." (Reuters)
