Mary J. Blige's "I Can Do Bad" Tops Box Office

Mary J. Blige's I Can Do Bad All by Myself, which co-starts Gladys Knight and Taraji P. Henson, became the number one movie in America this week after banking an estimated $24 million in box office sales over the weekend.

The Tyler Perry film out-performed its competition which included the sci-fi thriller, 9.

Perry provided most of the good at the weekend's box office dominating an otherwise mild sesh with $24 million at 2,255 playdates. That was more than double the next best performer during the first fall frame as Focus' launch of its offbeat animated sci-fi 9 drew $10.9 million at 1,656. TWC's fourth frame of Inglourious Basterds, Warner's third weekend of The Final Destination and Fox's soph sesh of All About Steve took the next three slots. (Variety)

Perry's latest movie project reportedly received a majority of its support from African American audiences.

As is typical for Perry films, the audience for I Can Do Bad All by Myself was predominantly black women, with 75 percent of moviegoers female and 80 percent African American. Tyler Perry is the only brand that seems able to bring out this audience consistently recently. And there are no signs of fatigue, even though he puts out two similar movies ever year. Sequel Why Did I Get Married Too? is set for release next Easter weekend, while For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf is expected to come out next fall. It also marks the director's most recent number one film debut.

I Can Do Bad All by Myself is Tyler Perry?s second film to premiere at No. 1 this year, following Madea Goes to Jail, which took in a total of $90.5 million in the U.S. for Lions Gate, according to Box Office Mojo, which also tracks receipts. The studio, based in Vancouver, is in seventh place at the box office with $247.5 million through Sept. 7. In Perry?s new film, he reprises the role of Madea, the foul-mouthed grandma. (Bloomberg)

The film centers on Henson as the main character which is sought after to look over her family.

The movie features Perry as Madea, his brash, cross-dressing alter ego, as well as Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson as a hard-drinking nightclub singer forced to care for her delinquent niece and nephews. (New York Daily News)
