Why Was Chris Brown Held From BET Awards?

Sources close to Brown and a spokesperson for BET said the singer was never billed to perform at the Michael Jackson-based tribute ceremony.

Reports said Reverend Al Sharpton, who has been a spokesperson for the Jackson family in recent days, had a hand in quashing Brown's appearance (Sharpton told MTV News on Tuesday (June 30) that the rumors have no validity). Although Brown himself has not commented on the reports, a source close to his camp told MTV News that Brown was never confirmed to be a part of the show and the rumors regarding Brown and BET were untrue; a spokesperson for BET corroborated that information, adding that "the rumors are false." A rep close to Brown also said the singer had no intention of performing.

Former BET personality Toure sparked speculation of Covergirl having his alleged set called off.

"Real talk: Chris Brown was going to perform but Covergirl and Rihanna nixed that," he wrote via Twitter. "@BarkBiteBlog Covergirl is a BET sponsor. Rihanna is a Covergirl spokesmodel. Thus, they have some say." (Toure's Twitter)

Juelz Santana said Jay also played a role in getting Brown nixed.
