Ali Shaheed Muhammad - Shaheedullah and Stereotypes Review

Artist: Ali Shaheed Muhammad
Title: Shaheedullah and Stereotypes
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a hip-hop producer and DJ who rose to fame with A Tribe Called Quest. The group disbanded in 1998 and Muhammad continued his career in music as a member of Lucy Pearl, which also featured Raphael Saddiq and the sexy Dawn Robinson of R&B group En Vogue. He then decided to embark on a solo career, and this is the product.

Muhammad's solo debut, "Shaheedullah and Stereotypes," will arrive on shelves on October 12th, to be followed later this year or in the first quarter of 2005 by releases from Chip Fu, Kay and Sy Smith. Muhammad is also hoping to sign former Mint Condition member Stokley. All of those acts appear on "Shaheedullah and Stereotypes," which is dominated by live instrumentation.

The album is a wonderful mix of hip hop and soul, blended together beautifully. It’s the perfect chill out album, but it also has subtle energy, as shown in songs such as Tight which makes it an excellent hip hop album as well. The album seems split into two parts, with the first half being more hip hop, with Ali himself providing the vocals on tracks such as Industry/Life, whereas the second half of the albums seems more soul with the vocals turning instead towards the beautiful voices of his female singers, of which Part Of The Night is a perfect example.

Industry/Life is an outstanding track on an excellent album. It blends perfectly hip hop vocals with a chill out beat to provide a masterfully crafted chill out song. Tight is another amazing track, with a more up tempo beat blended with nice hip hop vocals. It is a truly quality album, whether you buy it for the hip hop side or the soul side, it’s well worth any money you pay out for it.
